Special Screening of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony
“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”
With Beth Gibbons of Portishead
Saturday 18th September 7.30pm
The Globe £10.
On September 18th at 7.30pm, we are very pleased to present a special screening of Gorecki’s “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” featuring Beth Gibbons of Portishead, accompanied by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Krzystof Penderecki.
“Where previous version have been eerily transcendent, Gibbons’ quiet, demotic vulnerability makes this even more harrowing and emotionally engaging” (The Guardian).
This special evening is in memory of Sara Squires, founding member of the Chagford Film Festival and long-term friend of Beth Gibbons. Beth will be present at the performance, along with Saras family and many of her friends.
Often viewed as a memorial for the victims of the Holocaust, it has three texts in Polish, including a text written on the wall of a Gestapo prison and a folk song in which a mother laments the loss of her son. It sold over a million copies on its release in 1992, becoming the bestselling classical album of that year.
